Afterschool Adventures

No current offerings
Check back soon or plan your own afterschool adventure!

After being in school all day, there’s nothing better than getting outside in nature! Tuning into the changing seasons, our environmental educators plan afterschool sessions that mix active play with exploration of the natural world around us. In the past we’ve offered these programs at BEEC, the Retreat Farm, and Westgate Housing, and we’ve collaborated with organizations such as In-Sight Photography. We also offer afterschool programs for schools.

Seasonal Afterschool Adventures

Autumn Amble: Come discover the autumn world of singing insects, falling leaves, and traveling seeds. We will explore the changing world around us and play games that mimic the autumn behaviors of animals.

Chilly Changes: Let’s investigate the changing forest. We’ll explore how the plants and animals are preparing for the long cold winter, and play games that mimic their activities.

Winter Woods: Come discover the winter world around us through games, activities and exploration. We will explore winter survival strategies of animals, uncover stories by tracking wildlife, and mimic their winter behaviors.

Warming Days: As the world begins to slowly re-emerge from winter’s slumber we will explore what animals are doing and play games that mimic their activities.

Spring Stroll: Come explore and discover the spring world of bursting buds, returning birds, and emerging insects. Welcoming this magical time, we will also make nature art, and build fairy and gnome homes.

What families are saying about our programs:

"BEEC provides authentic and scientifically based outdoor education that puts kids in contact with our local ecology. I love that. I also love the flexibility of programs — that you have things available during school breaks, as well as making it possible to sign up for only one or more days."
"My child loves BEEC and can’t wait to share the day’s activities with me when I pick them up. The enthusiasm and joy in their voice as they recount each hands on experience, and the amount of new knowledge gained in such a short period, makes me a very happy parent."
"Having someone else with lots of wisdom of the outdoors lead us has been a great way to get us hiking and we always learn something and enjoy the company of the other families."
- Hike & Seek Participant
"I love that the BEEC programs encourage our family to be outside learning about nature."
- Hike & Seek Participant
"I enjoyed the weekly walks in nature with my kids. It was something fun to do every week with other little ones and a good way to get out of the house."
- Little Explorers Participant
"My grandson lives in Boston, came to 3 Little Explorer sessions and now looks for insects, animal tracks, and spider webs wherever he goes!"
"My son and I love going to BEEC's Little Explorers program each week to explore, go on an adventure, and to engage with other children (and adults!). It is a beautiful place we are so lucky to have access to."
"The Little Explorers program is a great way for my young child to socialize with other children, and to be outside in nature playing and learning at the same time. My 3-year-old looks forward to this program every week."
"We paddled past spots that I’ve driven by hundreds of times, but this was the first time that I *really* saw them. Really saw how big and rich and beautiful the river and the islands were. It was incredibly moving, and a great reminder that the beauty of our natural world is right there, if we’re just willing to slow down and really look."
- Hike & Seek Participant
"My toddler has loved these programs! She was out walking with me the other day and said "Look! Deer tracks!" I love that she is looking for animal signs and imagining the animal world around her."
