Retreat Meadows Nighthawk Paddle

In late August, nighthawks begin their migration to their winter homes in South America. Join us in a Retreat Meadows flotilla to give them a send-off. These aerial acrobats will begin foraging on the wing in the early evening in preparation to head south at dusk. Sometimes hundreds of birds can be seen in a single flock. Nighthawks have become much rarer in recent decades. Once commonly seen and heard flying over Brattleboro on summer evenings, the only opportunity we have to see them now is during migration.

Bring a boat and meet us at the docks by the Marina restaurant in Brattleboro. We will paddle the meadows with our eyes on the skies. Will we see a huge flock of nighthawks? Probably not. Will we see a few? Almost certainly. Will the Meadows be beautiful and filled with surprises at sunset in August? Of course.
